Area Boys Force Thief To Carry Canopy He Stole On His Head And Walk Through Highway For Motorist To See Him

A suspected thief caught in Shiashi has been made to carry the very item he allegedly stole, a bundle of canopy, on his head as residents marched him through the town in a public walk of shame.

Stripped down and visibly shaken, he trudged along the roadside with the rolled-up canopy balanced above him, while a crowd trailed close behind, several of them gripping pieces of wood, ready to strike should he attempt to make a run for it.

At intervals, he was made to repeat the words “I won’t steal again,” his voice cracking as he pleaded with the group surrounding him.

Tears streamed down his face throughout the ordeal, and his repeated begging did little to soften the crowd’s resolve.

Nobody stepped in to call off the parade, and the procession continued through the town, drawing onlookers who watched as he was marched past homes and shops carrying the evidence of his alleged crime for all to see.

By the time the walk ended, the suspect had been paraded through much of Shiashi, his cries largely ignored by those determined to make an example of him before handing the matter over, as is often the case in such incidents, to community elders or the police.
