Anambra Arewa Community Demands Constitutional Amendment To Battle Gender Based Violence

The Arewa Community in Anambra state has demanded the amendment of certain laws that encourages Gender Based Violence across the country.

The Community described those laws as enemical to the peaceful coexistence of spouses at home and in the society at large.

According to the resolution reached at the end of it’s sensitization and counseling program against Gender Based Violence (GBV) in Awka Anambra state, the community stated that with the amendment of those laws the rate of Gender Based Violence would reduce drastically.

Speaking earlier, the Resource Person Alfa Sheriff Olarenwaju stated that other causes of Gender Based Violence include poverty, lack of education and communication among spouses.

“There are laws they have given rise to such violence and the earlier those laws are amended the better for the Nigerian society because man is not made for laws but laws are made for man “

“Also other causes of violence among gender is poverty and we advocate that both men and women should get occupied with meanful means of livelihood and also when you look at the literacy rate in the country there is that urgent need for all and sundry to embrace education because it the easiest way to liberate one from that propensity to get violent “

Making a Koranic allusion, Olarenwaju noted that Prophet Muhammad never supported violence against women adding that there religious consequences for woman battery.

He further explained that violence is not only against women but men observing that there are situations where the women carry out violence against men .

Also speaking the Director Population Program and former Gender Coordinator in the state Ministry of Health Mrs Ngozi Ekeh noted that depression has always led to such domestic or non domestic violence adding that both genders must exercise restraints and decorum in their day to day activities.

“When depression sets in, frustration comes into the picture and one resorts to violence as an option and this has led to broken marriages” she said.

President of the Association of Non Indegense In Anambra State (ANIAS ) Prince Chigozie Nweke described the theme of the program as one that would have far reaching effects on the Nigerian society adding that the Arewa Community in Anambra state should be encouraged towards future sensitization programs of this nature.

Leader of the Arewa Community in Awka Sariki of the Northern Community Alhaji Garba Haruna congratulated the community for take such a bold step adding that the program would be a continuous activity in the area.

Haruna urged his subjects to take advantage of the program to cement relationships across genders noting that Gender Based Violence knows no bounds or religion.
