278 motorcycles impounded as Lagos intensifies okada ban enforcement

The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Unit, popularly known as the Task Force, has announced the seizure of 278 commercial motorcycles during a weeklong enforcement operation targeting riders flouting restrictions on Okada activities across the state.

The Chairman of the agency, Adetayo Akerele, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday by the Task Force spokesperson, Abdulraheem Gbadeyan.

Akerele explained that the operation was carried out in accordance with the Lagos State Government’s directive banning commercial motorcycles from operating on highways and other designated restricted corridors under the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018.

He said the exercise was designed to improve public safety, safeguard lives and property, and curb criminal activities linked to the misuse of motorcycles.

According to him, the operation also reflects the renewed determination of the Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Mr Fatai Tijani, to maintain law and order across the metropolis.

The chairman noted that the latest enforcement drive followed a similar operation conducted a few weeks earlier, adding that the agency remained committed to tackling violations of traffic, environmental and security regulations.

Areas covered during the exercise included Ikorodu, Agric Bus Stop, Festac First Gate, Mazamaza, Iyana School, Iyana-Iba, Idimu Road, Egbeda, Kola Bus Stop, Iyana Ipaja, Ikotun Roundabout, Ajaiye in Ojokoro and Berger Bus Stop.

Akerele said a number of riders were apprehended for operating on prohibited routes and highways.

“Some were found using motorcycles to transport illicit substances and hazardous items such as petroleum products and gas.

“Others were conveying school children and toddlers in unsafe conditions on major roads,” he said.

He added that the operation had helped restore order and encouraged greater compliance with the state’s transport regulations in the affected communities.

The Task Force chairman further disclosed that all motorcycles seized during the exercise would be subjected to legal forfeiture proceedings in line with the provisions of the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018.

Reaffirming the agency’s resolve to continue the enforcement campaign, Akerele said authorities would not relent until there was full compliance with the law.

“We will not be cowed or fold our arms and allow people of criminal intent to overrun Lagos or surrender to their illegalities,” Akerele said.
