US-Iran war: US President Donald Trump on Saturday cancelled the scheduled visit of the US delegation, led by his Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner, to Islamabad for the potential second round of talks with Iran.

However, Trump said he and his administration “haven’t thought about” whether the United States would resume military strikes against Iran after the much-anticipated Islamabad Talks 2.0 did not materialise as both Tehran and Washington refused to budge from their maximalist demands.

Asked whether cancelling the Islamabad visit of Kushner and Witkoff signalled the US would return to war against Iran, Trump replied: “No. It doesn’t mean that. We haven’t thought about it yet” Axios reported.

Why Trump cancelled US team’s Islamabad visit?

Trump also defended his decision to call off the trip to Islamabad for discussions with Iranian officials, asserting that the current situation of negotiations does not justify making a 18-hour flight.

“I see no point of sending them on an 18 hour flight in the current situation [of the negotiations]. It’s too long. We can do it just as well by telephone. The Iranians can call us if they want. We are not going to travel just to sit there,” Trump was quoted as saying.

Trump claimed that the US is in a strong negotiating position and holds “all the cards”. “We have all the cards. We are not going to go there to sit around talking about nothing.”

Iranian delegation delivers demands to Pakistan

The US president’s comments came after the Iranian delegation led by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, departed Islamabad on Saturday evening (local time) after a day of high-level meetings with the top Pakistani officials.

According to a report by Al Jazeera, the Iranian team delivered Tehran’s official list of demands to Pakistani leadership, asking them to deliver it to the US and Israel if they want to complete solution to the conflict in West Asia.

What did Araghchi say about Iran’s stance?

In a statement on Telegram, Araghchi said the Iranian delegation explained Iran’s “principled positions regarding the latest developments related to the ceasefire and the complete end of the imposed war against” the Islamic Republic by US and Israeli forces to the Pakistani side.

Araghchi, who arrived in Islamabad late Friday, met Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Asim Munir and other top officials.

“Very fruitful visit to Pakistan, whose good offices and brotherly efforts to bring back peace to our region we very much value. Shared Iran’s position concerning workable framework to permanently end the war on Iran. Have yet to see if the US is truly serious about diplomacy,” Araghchi said in a post on X.
