Wike Declares PDP Nigeria’s Strongest Opposition, Congratulates APC on Election Wins

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has maintained that the Peoples Democratic Party remains the only major political force effectively challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress in Nigeria.

Wike made the assertion on Monday in Abuja during the commissioning of projects in the Federal Capital Territory, shortly after the conclusion of the Ekiti State governorship election and several bye-elections conducted across the country on Saturday.

Addressing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu through Vice President Kashim Shettima, who represented him at the event, the former Rivers State governor congratulated the APC on its electoral successes while also praising the PDP for retaining what he described as its position as Nigeria’s leading opposition party.

According to Wike, a healthy democracy requires both a governing party and a vibrant opposition capable of holding those in power accountable. He argued that genuine opposition goes beyond public criticism and political rhetoric, insisting that it must be demonstrated through active electoral competition and the ability to challenge the ruling party at the polls.

The minister noted that the outcome of the recent elections showed a clear distinction between the party in government and the party providing opposition, adding that the PDP continues to play that role more effectively than any other political party in the country.

Wike stated that while the APC emerged victorious in several contests, the PDP remains the principal opposition platform with the structure, reach, and political influence needed to contest power nationally.

His comments come amid ongoing debates over the state of opposition politics in Nigeria, with several parties positioning themselves ahead of future elections and seeking to challenge the APC’s dominance at both federal and state levels.

The FCT minister’s remarks are likely to reignite discussions about the future of the opposition landscape and the PDP’s role as the primary challenger to the ruling party ahead of the next electoral cycle.
