An Iranian proposal so far rejected by US President Donald Trump would open shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and end the US blockade of Iran while leaving talks on Iran’s nuclear programme for later, a senior Iranian official said on May 2.

Mr Trump, who has said repeatedly that Iran can never have a nuclear weapon, said on May 1 he was not satisfied with the latest Iranian proposal for talks, while Iran’s foreign minister said Tehran was ready for diplomacy if the United States changes its approach.

Mr Trump also said on May 1 that “on a human basis,” he did not prefer the military course of action against Iran and told leaders in the US Congress that he did not need their permission to extend the war beyond a deadline set by law for that day because the ceasefire had “terminated” hostilities.

Around 20,000 partygoers gathered on May 2 for an illegal rave at a military site in France, defying warnings about the risk of possible explosions from old ordnance.

Thumping techno music echoed across a vast firing range near the central French town of Bourges as revellers – many dressed in brightly coloured outfits, others shirtless – assembled for the unauthorised event, known as a “free party”, which began on May 1.

Austrian police said on May 2 they have arrested a 39-year-old suspect in connection with a case in which rat poison was placed in jars of baby food in what their German manufacturer called an attempt to extort it.

Five “manipulated” jars of the same kind of baby food made by German brand HiPP were safely recovered last month in Austria, the Czech Republic and Slovakia before they could be consumed, German police said at the time. A sixth jar thought to have been in Austria has still not been found.

“Today we succeeded in arresting a suspect, 39-year-old man,” a spokesperson for police in the eastern state of Burgenland, where a poisoned jar was found, said, declining to provide further details because they could jeopardise the investigation.

Arsenal opened up a six-point lead at the top of the Premier League on May 2 with a comfortable 3-0 win at home to Fulham, thanks to a first-half double from Viktor Gyokeres either side of a goal from Bukayo Saka.

The Gunners started brightly and with purpose, taking a deserved lead in the ninth minute when Saka put Raul Jimenez on his backside and laid the ball on a plate for Gyokeres to slot home.
