WhatsApp to Introduce Usernames, Allowing Users to Connect Without Sharing Phone Numbers

Meta has announced a major update to WhatsApp that will allow users to connect using unique usernames instead of their phone numbers, marking one of the platform’s biggest privacy-focused changes in recent years.

The feature, which will be rolled out gradually over the coming months, is designed to give users greater control over their personal information by preventing their phone numbers from being automatically visible in group chats and conversations with people they do not know.

According to Meta, users will be able to create and share a unique username, making it easier to communicate without revealing their mobile numbers.

“Designed to protect the privacy of your phone number,” WhatsApp said while announcing the new feature.

Under the updated system, users will no longer be able to contact someone simply by entering a phone number. Instead, they will need to know the person’s exact username before they can initiate a conversation.

Meta said the new approach is intended to strengthen privacy while reducing unwanted contact from strangers.

The company also clarified that there will be no public directory of usernames or search suggestions, meaning usernames cannot be discovered through browsing.

“There’s no directory to browse and no suggestions, so people need to know your exact username to contact you,” the company explained.

With WhatsApp serving more than three billion users worldwide, Meta acknowledged that not everyone will be able to secure their preferred username due to availability.

To manage demand, the company said the feature will be introduced in phases, with users receiving notifications once username registration becomes available in their respective regions.

Meta further revealed that content creators, businesses and organisations will have the option to reserve usernames that match their existing identities on Facebook and Instagram, helping them maintain consistent branding across the company’s platforms.

The upcoming feature is expected to significantly enhance user privacy while making it easier for individuals, businesses and public figures to connect without exposing personal phone numbers.
