We Will Never Succumb to Terror, Banditry— President Tinubu Tells Nigerians

President Bola Tinubu has reassured Nigerians that his administration remains resolute in the fight against insecurity and is intensifying efforts to address the economic challenges facing citizens, declaring that the country will not surrender to terrorism, banditry or any form of criminal intimidation.

The President’s message was delivered on Sunday by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, during the National Inter-Denominational Church Service held at the National Christian Centre as part of activities commemorating the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.

Speaking on behalf of the President, Akume said the Federal Government is fully aware of the economic difficulties confronting many Nigerians and is taking deliberate steps to ease the burden through policies and programmes aimed at improving citizens’ welfare.

According to him, the administration is not disconnected from the realities facing ordinary Nigerians and remains committed to ensuring that the benefits of democracy are felt across the country.

“Government is sensitive to all these pains, shares in these pains and has heard your cries,” Akume stated, assuring citizens that President Tinubu would continue to pursue measures targeted at addressing prevailing socio-economic concerns.

On the security situation, the SGF said the administration remains focused on safeguarding lives and property while strengthening efforts to secure the freedom of Nigerians held captive by criminal groups. He noted that security agencies are receiving the necessary support to confront threats in different parts of the country.

Despite the security challenges, Akume insisted that the government would not be intimidated by criminal elements.

“The government of Nigeria shall never succumb to terror, banditry or any form of criminal intimidation,” he declared.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s democratic journey, the SGF praised the country’s 27 years of uninterrupted civil rule since 1999, describing it as the outcome of the sacrifices made by countless Nigerians and pro-democracy advocates who fought for the restoration of democratic governance.

He paid tribute to heroes of the June 12 struggle, noting that many endured persecution, imprisonment, injuries and even death in their quest to secure democratic freedoms for future generations.

With preparations gradually gathering momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections, Akume called on Nigerians to reject violence, divisive rhetoric and political intolerance. He particularly urged young people not to allow themselves to be manipulated by politicians for acts capable of undermining peace and national unity.

“Do not rent out your conscience for money, drugs, political patronage or online applause. Your future is worth more than any politician’s temporary convenience,” he cautioned.

The SGF further appealed to religious leaders, traditional institutions, civil society groups, the media and families to play active roles in promoting peaceful coexistence, tolerance and responsible civic engagement as the nation approaches another electoral cycle.
