“We left Nigeria to find safety and build a life” — Nigerian siblings share asylum journey in UK

A pair of Nigerian siblings now living in the United Kingdom have shared their emotional journey of relocation, describing how they left Nigeria in search of safety and a chance to rebuild their lives.

Leaving home in search of safety

According to their account, the decision to leave was driven by fear, uncertainty, and the need to live freely without pressure or threats tied to their personal identities.

Back in Nigeria I was always exhausted from hiding who I am. I’m not going to lie to you. But over here in the UK, I’m trying to build a life for myself,” one of them said.

Asylum process and emotional support

The siblings also spoke about the challenges of the asylum process, describing it as mentally draining due to long waiting periods and uncertainty over outcomes.

One of them confirmed they had successfully received status after a difficult period of waiting, while their brother is still undergoing the process.

I also went through the asylum process and I know how stressful the waiting is. I’m really grateful I got my status. My brother stayed with me throughout all this, so I’m going to stay with him too until he makes his decision. I just want him to live in safety and not fear,” they added.

Similar asylum stories involving Nigerian nationals in the UK have been recorded since as far back as 2023, reflecting ongoing migration and protection-seeking trends.
