Watch: First Known Image of Top ISWAP Commander Emerges After Reported Death in Nigeria-US Counterterrorism

A photograph believed to be the first publicly known image of a senior commander of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, also known as Abbor Mainok, has surfaced following reports of his death during a joint counterterrorism operation involving Nigerian and United States forces in Borno State.

According to security sources, the image was obtained by counter-insurgency and security analyst, Zagazola Makama, from individuals familiar with the operation that reportedly led to the elimination of the high-ranking terrorist figure.

Sources disclosed that the photograph was taken shortly after al-Minuki was killed during an intelligence-driven mission targeting senior ISWAP commanders operating within the Lake Chad region. The operation reportedly took place in the vicinity of Metele, a community in Borno State that has witnessed significant insurgent activities over the years.

Security officials familiar with the development described the image as the first verified photograph of al-Minuki to become available since his involvement in the Boko Haram insurgency and his eventual rise through the ranks of ISWAP. Despite being regarded as one of the group’s influential commanders, he reportedly managed to avoid public exposure and remained largely unknown to both security agencies and the wider public.

Intelligence sources further revealed that the photograph was reportedly taken by individuals who recovered his body after the operation. According to the sources, the body was located and buried approximately two days after the strike that allegedly killed him.

The emergence of the image is expected to assist security agencies and intelligence analysts in confirming the identity of the slain commander. It also provides a rare glimpse into one of the most elusive figures within ISWAP, a faction that has remained a major security challenge in Nigeria’s North-East region and parts of the Lake Chad Basin.
