VIDEO: ‘If You Were Igbo, I Would Have Detained You’ – Police Officer Extorting UK Returnee Threatens

A video showing some officers of the Nigeria Police Force allegedly attempting to extort money from a Nigerian returnee from the United Kingdom along the Lagos-Sagamu Expressway has sparked widespread outrage on social media.

In the now-viral clip, one of the officers at a police checkpoint was heard asking for the owner of the vehicle before demanding money from the traveller.

Responding to the request, the motorist identified himself as the owner of the vehicle and explained that he had just returned from the United Kingdom.

“I came from the UK, and I am the owner. I don’t have anything, Oga. If I have, I would have given you,” the traveller said.

The officer, however, dismissed his explanation, replying, “Go and do better thing.”

The traveller’s refusal to part with money reportedly led to a heated exchange with other officers at the checkpoint.

In the video, one of the officers was also heard making a controversial remark, suggesting that the motorist was fortunate not to belong to a particular ethnic group, claiming he would have detained him otherwise.

“I just want to see how you are going to behave. If you are another person, Igbo or others, I will just carry you go (to the station). If you don’t have anything, go and park,” the officer allegedly said.

The visibly frustrated motorist then demanded the return of his driver’s licence, questioning why it had been seized.

“Then can I have my driving licence? Wetin I do na?” he asked.

The video has since triggered condemnation from many Nigerians online, with social media users calling on the Nigeria Police Force to investigate the officers involved and take appropriate disciplinary action.

The incident has also reignited conversations about alleged extortion, abuse of power, and unprofessional conduct by some police officers at checkpoints across the country.
