USD 1 Million Missiles vs USD 20000 Drones: How cheap Iranian weapons are outsmarting US military system
It is hard to believe, but the nearly trillion-dollar U.S. military is struggling to handle small, cheap drones in its ongoing fight with Iran. The story behind this, originally highlighted by ‘The Conversation’, is both interesting and shocking, and it shows how modern war is changing very fast.
Iran has built a simple drone called Shahed, which uses a motorcycle-type engine and is filled with explosives. Iran has used these drones to attack cities, power plants, and even U.S. military bases, including a strike on the U.S. Victory Base Complex in Baghdad in early April 2026. Each Shahed drone costs only around $20,000 to $50,000 (₹18.6 lakh to ₹46.5 lakh) to make. But to shoot it down, the U.S. military often fires missiles that cost over $1 million (₹9.3 crore) each. Just imagine spending ₹9 crore to destroy something worth ₹18 lakh. This is the biggest headache America is facing today.
Simple Drone, Big Problem
The Shahed is not advanced or high-tech. When experts opened captured drones, they found normal commercial parts inside, like processors from a U.S. company, fuel pumps from a U.K. firm, and converters from China. These are everyday parts you can find in factories or even in farm machines. That is exactly why this drone is so dangerous, it is cheap, easy to make, and difficult to stop.
Russia, which also makes this drone for its war against Ukraine, does not mind even if 75% of its Shahed drones get destroyed. Why? Because they are still winning the cost game. The strategy is simple, keep sending hundreds of cheap drones until the enemy runs out of costly missiles to defend itself. It is like throwing stones at a fort until the guards run out of bullets.
Ukraine Found a Smart Trick
Ukraine, having no other option, came up with a clever idea. They built small interceptor drones that crash into Shahed drones in mid-air. Each interceptor costs only $1,000 to $2,000 (₹93,000 to ₹1.86 lakh). Ukrainian companies are now making thousands of these every month. This is much better maths, using a ₹1.86 lakh drone to stop a ₹18 lakh attack.
Because of this experience, U.S. and allied forces are now requesting Ukrainian drone experts to teach them what they have learned on the battlefield.
Why America Cannot Move Fast
Now comes the surprising part. America has the technology and the money, but it still cannot quickly build its own solution. The reason is bureaucracy, that is, a slow and complicated system of rules, approvals, and paperwork.
The U.S. Department of Defense follows a process that can take 10 years or more from saying “we need this weapon” to actually getting it in soldiers’ hands. The process has three big stages.
First, a formal requirement document must be prepared and approved. Earlier, even after one military branch approved it, the document had to go through a joint review by all branches, which took more than 800 days just for approval. This joint system was finally shut down in 2025, but the new system is still not fully ready.
Second, after approval, funding has to be arranged through a budget system created back in 1961. Adding a new program to the budget takes more than two years, because military budgets are planned years in advance. By the time money arrives, the threat may have already changed.
Third, even after money is given, designing and building the weapon takes around 12 years on average, according to a 2025 report by the Government Accountability Office.
Why The System Was Built Like This
You may think this is the military’s fault, but it is not. This long process was created on purpose during the Cold War to stop unnecessary spending by different military branches. The aim was to protect taxpayer money. Also, big defence companies enjoy this slow system because they have the patience and money to wait, while smaller, faster companies cannot survive such long delays.
The problem is that these rules were made for an old era of costly jets and missiles, not for cheap flying bombs made from basic parts.
What Is Changing Now
In August 2025, the Pentagon ended its old requirement system and brought in a faster, more flexible one. But the 1960s budget system is still mostly unchanged. Real change needs action from Congress, which itself moves very slowly.
Officials are now using flexible contract methods like Other Transaction Authority to buy anti-drone tech faster. But these are still a small portion of the defence budget. Sadly, the easier option for the system is to simply buy more of the same expensive missiles, which actually makes the cost problem worse.
So while Shahed drones keep flying and exploding, the world’s most powerful military is still stuck inside files, forms, and paperwork.
