Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has paid tribute to journalists killed during the conflict with Israel, praising media workers who he said risked—and lost—their lives to report events from the ground.

Marking Lebanon’s annual Martyrs’ Day, Aoun said slain journalists had carried out a “sacred message” by continuing to document developments despite the dangers. He specifically referenced reporters allegedly targeted while covering the conflict in southern Lebanon.

The remarks come after the killing of journalist Amal Khalil in an Israeli air strike in April. Lebanese officials, including Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, have accused Israel of deliberately targeting media personnel, allegations Israel has not accepted.

According to Lebanese press organisations, dozens of media workers have been killed since fighting intensified earlier this year. International monitoring groups have also raised concerns about risks faced by journalists operating in conflict zones.
