US Congressman Demands Immediate Release of Nnamdi Kanu, Criticizes Nigerian Government

A member of the United States Congress, John James, has called for the immediate and unconditional release of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, urging the Nigerian government to ensure that his rights are respected.

Speaking on the floor of the US Congress on Thursday, James accused the Nigerian government of failing to adequately protect innocent citizens, alleging that authorities were enabling the continued killing of Nigerians.

The congressman also urged the Nigerian government to conduct any legal proceedings involving Kanu in line with the country’s constitution, insisting that he should have access to legal representation, medical care, and humane conditions of detention in accordance with international law.

Describing Nigeria as “the deadliest place on earth to be a Christian,” James alleged that extremist groups such as Boko Haram continue to operate without a meaningful response from the authorities.

He further claimed that Kanu was convicted following what he described as a “false show trial” for speaking out about events in Nigeria, alleging that the IPOB leader is serving a life sentence on what he termed false terrorism charges.

Appealing to his fellow lawmakers, James said:

“I implore my colleagues to support my bill for the Nigerian government to release Nnamdi Kanu immediately and unconditionally.”

He added:

“America gives billions of dollars to Nigeria. We will not continue to fund Christian genocide.”

The lawmaker further argued that the United States has a moral responsibility to protect persecuted Christians around the world.

“We have the moral obligation to stand up, so that our Christian brothers and sisters can worship the Lord our God in peace,” he stated.

The remarks have drawn attention to Kanu’s ongoing legal case, which has remained a subject of both domestic and international debate. While supporters continue to demand his release, the Nigerian government has consistently maintained that the matter is before the courts and should be resolved through the judicial process.
