Ukraine-Russia war to end on this date? Donald Trump signals Ukraine ceasefire possibility after call with Vladimir Putin, says ‘suggested a little bit of…’
Donald Trump has suggested there could be a ceasefire in the Ukraine war after a phone call with Vladimir Putin. Their discussion also included wider global issues, such as Iran’s nuclear programme.
Speaking after the call, Trump said Russia may be willing to pause the fighting. He indicated that a change in Moscow’s position could lead to an agreement, depending on certain conditions.
Trump said Putin had shown some willingness to reduce tensions, noting that the Russian leader “suggested a little bit of a ceasefire” and could soon make an official announcement. He added that Putin had previously been open to a deal but faced difficulties that slowed progress.
“I spoke to Vladimir Putin today… I talked about Ukraine, and I talked a little bit about, uh, Iran. I talked about a few different subjects, mostly about Ukraine, and we had a very good conversation. And I think we’re going to come up with a solution relatively quickly, I hope… I think he’d like to see a solution, I can tell you, and that’s good,” Trump said.
Trump Prioritises Ending Ukraine War
The conversation also covered tensions in the Middle East, especially Iran’s nuclear activities. Trump said Putin showed interest in helping the US with uranium enrichment.
However, Trump made clear that his main focus is Ukraine. When Putin offered help on other issues, Trump replied: “Before you help me, I want to end your war.”
“… He told me he’d like to be involved with the (nuclear) enrichment (in Iran), if he can help us get it. I said I’d much rather have you be involved with ending the war in Ukraine…He doesn’t want to see them have a nuclear weapon, either… He suggested a little bit of a ceasefire (in Ukraine), and I think he might do that. He might announce something having to do with it…”
‘I Want To End Your War’: Trump Tells Putin
“We talked more about the war in Ukraine, but he would like to be of help (in ending the Gulf War). I said, before you help me, I want to end your war… I think he was ready to make a deal a while ago. I think some people made it difficult for him to make a deal…,” said Trump.
Trump also repeated his view on Iran: “He told me he’d like to be involved with the (nuclear) enrichment (in Iran), if he can help us get it. I said I’d much rather have you be involved with ending the war in Ukraine. To me, that would be more important because we’ve got to have that.”
He added that Russia does not support Iran having nuclear weapons, saying, “He doesn’t want to see them have a nuclear weapon, either.”
Ceasefire Talk Linked to Victory Day
According to Russian state news agency TASS, the 90-minute call was described by Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov as “frank and businesslike.”
The leaders reportedly discussed the possibility of a ceasefire around Victory Day, the Ukraine peace process, and wider tensions involving Iran and the Persian Gulf.
