UK Slaps New Entry Rule On Nigeria, 32 African Countries [FULL LIST]

The United Kingdom has reiterated that Nigerians and citizens of 32 other African countries must obtain entry clearance before travelling to or transiting through the country under updated immigration guidance issued by the UK Home Office.

According to the revised guidance, travellers are expected to ensure they meet the UK’s visa and entry requirements before booking their flights. Authorities warned that passengers who fail to obtain the necessary documentation could experience delays, face travel disruptions, or even be denied boarding by airlines.

The Home Office explained that the updated rules continue to require nationals of more than 100 countries and territories to secure a visa before entering the UK for visits of up to six months, unless they qualify for an exemption under existing immigration regulations.

The visa requirement also applies to certain passengers transiting through airports in the United Kingdom, depending on their nationality and travel circumstances.

In addition, the Home Office stated that stateless individuals, as well as travellers using travel documents other than officially recognised national passports or identity cards, must obtain entry clearance before embarking on their journey.

UK authorities said the updated guidance forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen border security, improve immigration compliance, and ensure that travellers satisfy all entry requirements before arriving in the country.

The United Kingdom remains one of the preferred destinations for many Africans travelling for education, business, tourism, medical treatment, and family visits. Officials, however, stressed that prospective visitors should verify the applicable immigration requirements well in advance of their travel dates to avoid complications.

The African countries whose citizens are required to obtain entry clearance before travelling to the UK include Algeria, Angola, Botswana, Burundi, Cameroon, the Republic of the Congo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Eritrea, Eswatini, Ethiopia, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Côte d’Ivoire, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Libya, Malawi, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zimbabwe.

The Home Office advised all affected travellers to ensure they obtain the appropriate visa or entry clearance before making travel arrangements to avoid being refused boarding or entry into the UK.
