UGMC successfully performs four more kidney transplants

The University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) has recorded another major milestone in healthcare after successfully performing four kidney transplant surgeries, bringing the total number of kidney transplants conducted at the facility to 15 since the programme began in 2024.

The latest procedures were carried out on May 25 and 26, 2026, involving four patients suffering from kidney failure and four living donors.

The surgeries were performed by a team of specialists led by internationally acclaimed transplant surgeon Prof. Nadey Hakim, who is affiliated with leading global medical institutions, including the Cleveland Clinic UK.

Announcing the achievement, UGMC described the successful surgeries as part of its commitment to providing advanced medical care and restoring hope to patients battling life-threatening health conditions.

The hospital’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Abdul Samed-Tanko, and Director of Medical Affairs, Dr. Baffoe Gyan, commended the medical teams whose dedication made the procedures possible.

According to UGMC, the transplants were the result of a coordinated effort involving specialists from various departments, including urology, general surgery, nephrology, cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, anaesthesia, intensive care, theatre services, allied health professionals, biomedical engineers, and other support staff.

Kidney transplantation is widely regarded as one of the most effective treatments for patients with end-stage kidney disease.

The procedure can significantly improve quality of life and reduce dependence on regular dialysis, which can be costly and physically demanding for patients and their families.

UGMC performed its first kidney transplants in June 2024, marking a historic moment in Ghana’s healthcare sector.

Since then, the centre has continued to build local expertise and strengthen its capacity to provide world-class transplant services within the country.

The latest success further highlights Ghana’s growing ability to undertake complex medical procedures locally, reducing the need for patients to seek expensive treatment abroad.
