Trump Fires Fresh Warning at Iran: ‘They Will Be Laughing No Longer’
President Donald Trump took to Truth Social on Sunday with a lengthy and pointed attack on Iran, blasting the country for decades of what he called deliberate stalling, while saving some of his sharpest words for former presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden.
What Trump Said
Trump accused Iran of playing games with the United States for 47 years, arguing the country only gained real power and resources when Obama took office.
“He was not only good to them, he was great, actually going to their side, jettisoning Israel, and all other Allies, and giving Iran a major and very powerful new lease on life,” Trump wrote.
He zeroed in on the financial dimension of Obama’s Iran policy, referring to hundreds of billions of dollars in sanctions relief and a separate $1.7 billion cash payment, claiming the money arrived in Tehran in suitcases and satchels and that Iranian officials had never seen anything like it.
“They finally found the greatest SUCKER of them all, in the form of a weak and stupid American President,” Trump wrote of Obama, before adding that Biden was even worse.
Trump also accused Iran of killing Americans with roadside bombs, suppressing protests and wiping out what he described as 42,000 innocent, unarmed protesters. He closed the post with a warning. “They will be laughing no longer!”
Iran Has Responded to a US Peace Proposal
Trump’s post came as diplomatic activity behind the scenes was picking up. Iran delivered a response to a US peace proposal through a Pakistani mediator, according to Iranian news agency IRNA. The agency did not provide details on what was being considered by either side.
The US Drew a Red Line
US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz spelled out Washington’s core demand in an interview on Fox News Sunday.
“President Trump has been clear they will never have a nuclear weapon and they cannot hold the world’s economies hostage,” Waltz said, describing it as a “very clear red line” in the latest US proposal.
Iran Is Not Backing Down
Even as the talks moved forward, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian struck a defiant note on Sunday, making clear that engaging in negotiations should not be mistaken for weakness.
“We will never bow our heads before the enemy, and if talk of dialogue or negotiation arises, it does not mean surrender or retreat,” Pezeshkian wrote on X.
