Tinubu’s Government a ‘360-Degree Failure’ – Atiku Backs CAN on Security

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has backed the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) over its recent declarations on national security, describing President Bola Tinubu’s administration as a “360-degree failure.”

The development comes amid recent insecurity, made worse by the recent abduction of school children and teachers in Oyo State.

Reacting to the communique issued by CAN leadership under Archbishop Daniel Okoh following the 2026 National Church Leaders Summit, Atiku stated that he fully aligns with the concerns and sympathies of the Church regarding the safety of Nigerian lives.

He noted that CAN’s demand for a comprehensive review of the nation’s security architecture, enhanced intelligence gathering, stronger inter-agency cooperation, improved operational effectiveness, and greater accountability directly mirrors his own position on the current administration’s shortcomings in combating terrorism, banditry, and violent crime.

Atiku commended the unity demonstrated by various Christian denominations and blocs—including the Catholic Secretariat, the Christian Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (CPFN), the Organisation of African Instituted Churches, and TEKAN/ECWA—in calling for a three-day period of national mourning.

He emphasized that this period should serve as a moment of deep reflection for political leaders in power who hold the responsibility to protect citizens. Noting that insecurity ravages the country without regard for religious or ethnic differences,

Atiku urged other faith-based organizations, particularly within the Muslim bloc, to lend their voices to the wake-up call and demand accountability from the ruling party.

“On behalf of the political opposition whom Tinubu has ignored as well as the Nigerian people, I urge Tinubu to listen to this urgent call from CAN and diligently ponder his courses of action beyond rhetorics, at least for his remaining months in office,” he added.
