Tinubu To Address National Assembly On June 12 For Democracy Day Celebration

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is scheduled to deliver a joint address to the National Assembly on Friday, June 12, 2026, as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 27th Democracy Day anniversary, according to an announcement by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF).

The disclosure was made during the inauguration of the Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) set up to coordinate the national celebrations.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, who inaugurated the committee at the Shehu Shagari Complex in Abuja, described the presidential address as a central highlight of the modest but purposeful programme approved for the occasion.

Senator Akume characterised Democracy Day as a moment for sober reflection on the sacrifices made by Nigerians who struggled for the restoration of democratic rule, paying tribute in particular to the heroes of the June 12, 1993 struggle and the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola.

He noted that the anniversary also presents the Federal Government with an opportunity to highlight its achievements in strengthening democratic institutions and driving national development, even amid ongoing socio-economic pressures.

With just ten days to go before the anniversary, the SGF urged committee members to begin work immediately, stressing that this year’s activities would reflect both the national mood and the government’s commitment to fiscal prudence.

The full schedule of approved activities for the 27th Democracy Day celebrations is as follows: a World Press Conference on Thursday, June 4; Special Juma’at Prayers on Friday, June 5; a Special Inter-denominational Church Service on Sunday, June 7; a Democracy Day Public Lecture on Tuesday, June 9; Youth and Women-Oriented Programmes on Wednesday, June 10; and a Presidential Broadcast and Democracy Day Gala Night, both on Friday, June 12, 2026.
