The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has confirmed that an incident occurred involving the Warri-Itakpe Train Service (WITS), prompting an emergency response and investigations into the circumstances surrounding the event.

In an official statement issued on behalf of the corporation, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the NRC, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, disclosed that emergency personnel and relevant authorities were immediately mobilised to the scene following reports of the incident.

According to the statement, response teams arrived promptly and have been working to provide assistance to affected passengers while assessing the situation.

“Emergency response teams and relevant authorities are currently at the scene attending to the situation and providing necessary assistance,” the NRC said.

While details surrounding the cause of the incident remain unclear, the Presidency has confirmed that at least three people lost their lives as a result of the tragedy.

In an update released after the incident, government officials stated that efforts were ongoing to determine the full extent of the damage and establish the circumstances that led to the occurrence.

“Relevant authorities continue to assess the full circumstances surrounding the incident, while support is being provided to affected passengers,” the statement noted.

The Presidency also extended condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and expressed solidarity with those affected.

“The thoughts and prayers of all Nigerians are with the victims and their loved ones,” the statement added.

Authorities have urged members of the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information as investigations continue. They advised citizens to rely only on official statements and updates issued by the Nigerian Railway Corporation and other authorised government agencies.

The Warri-Itakpe rail corridor is one of Nigeria’s major standard-gauge rail lines, connecting communities across Delta, Edo, Kogi and neighbouring states. The service has become an important transportation link for passengers and businesses, making the incident a matter of significant public concern.

As rescue and assessment efforts continue, officials are expected to provide further details regarding the cause of the incident, the identities of the victims, and any additional safety measures that may be implemented to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
