In India, pakoras are usually made with onions, potatoes, spinach or chillies. But in Jakarta, a street-side stall is serving something unusual: cobra pakoras. Live cobra snakes are cut and cooked in front of customers, a sight that may shock many, but is part of local street food culture.

Viral video by Indian vlogger

Indian vlogger Akash Chaudhary recently shared a video from Jakarta showing this unique food. The clip shows live cobras kept in crates. Once a customer orders, the snake is taken out, cut and its meat is chopped into small pieces.

How cobra pakoras are made

The meat is coated in gram flour, spices and green chillies, then deep-fried in oil. The dish is called ‘Cobra Pakode.’ Along with this, the stall also serves snake blood as a drink, dried gall bladder and even noodle-style dishes made from snake meat. The full meal costs around Rs 1000.

Internet reacts with shock

The video quickly went viral on social media, leaving many Indian viewers stunned. Comments ranged from humorous to shocked, with people comparing it to Indian traditions where snakes are worshipped, especially during Nag Panchami.

Popular street food in Southeast Asia

Despite the reactions, snake meat is widely consumed in countries like Indonesia, Vietnam and China. In Jakarta’s Mangga Besar area, this stall is especially popular and opens daily in the evening. Locals believe cobra meat is rich in protein and has medicinal benefits.

Culture, beliefs and health concerns

Some people consume snake blood believing it boosts strength and cures illnesses. However, experts warn that improper handling may carry risks due to venom. While eating snakes is an old tradition in Southeast Asia, it contrasts with Indian beliefs, where snakes are associated with Lord Shiva and are worshipped rather than consumed.
