“There Is No Country With 100% Security” — Defence Minister Christopher Musa Speaks on Rising Kidnapping in Nigeria
Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, has stated that no nation in the world enjoys complete security, insisting that terrorism in Nigeria has significantly reduced despite the growing concerns over kidnapping and violent crimes across different parts of the country.
Speaking during a recent engagement, the Defence Minister explained that while the country continues to face security challenges, the nature of the threats has shifted from large-scale terrorist attacks to widespread kidnapping activities.
According to him, terrorism is gradually declining due to the efforts of security agencies and military operations being carried out across troubled regions.
However, he admitted that kidnapping has now become a major concern confronting the nation. “There is no country with 100 percent security. There will always be issues. Now we are having issues of kidnapping more than terrorism,” he said.
Musa blamed the rise in kidnapping and other criminal activities on what he described as the collapse of family values and weakening societal standards.
He argued that many young people are increasingly driven by the desire to make quick money without considering moral values or lawful means of survival.
The minister further lamented that society has become excessively materialistic, where wealth is often celebrated without questioning its source.
According to him, this trend has encouraged criminality and reduced respect for discipline, honesty, and hard work.
“This is due to the failure of family values, failure of law and order. The society has become very materialistic. People think the way and manner they make money should be applauded,” Musa added.
His remarks come at a time when several communities across Nigeria have continued to experience cases of abduction for ransom, especially in parts of the North-West, North-Central, and some southern states.
In recent months, there have been repeated calls from citizens and civil society groups for stronger action against kidnappers and armed gangs terrorizing rural communities and highways.
Despite criticisms from some Nigerians over the country’s security situation, the Defence Minister maintained that the military and other security agencies remain committed to restoring peace and stability nationwide.
He also stressed the need for parents, religious institutions, schools, and community leaders to help rebuild moral values within society, noting that security cannot be achieved by the government alone.
