A coeducational school such as Marlborough College, where Kate studied, was reportedly among the possibilities, particularly because it could eventually have allowed George to attend alongside Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. Instead, William and Kate settled on Eton, the same school William and Harry attended.

Although the parents made the decision, it does seem that George’s wishes were also taken into account. Beyond royal tradition, a source close to the family said that “George had always wanted to follow in his dad’s footsteps.”

Sending a future king to school comes with a very different set of concerns, and privacy was clearly high on the list for William and Kate. After years of trying to give their children as normal a childhood as possible, they were now making a decision that would place George in one of the most visible stages of his life.

According to PEOPLE, royal historian Amanda Foreman explained why Eton ultimately appealed to the couple: “They had wanted a fresh look, but this is trusted, tried and true, and they know there will be absolute discretion.” That point goes directly to why the familiar institution offered something a new school might not.

Eton therefore gave William and Kate a combination of things they were looking for: a school deeply familiar to the family, established traditions and a level of privacy they could trust. With George now beginning a new chapter away from Charlotte and Louis, the choice becomes about much more than where he will study.

The Blast reported that George’s private room includes a single bed, a desk, and some shelves, with no fellow student sharing the space. The setup may be modest, but it is not unusual for Eton, where each boy gets his own room, and accommodations become more spacious as students move through the school.

For now, George’s new room isn’t really a room of royal luxury; it’s a room of boarding-school life. This stripped-back space is only the first of his Eton adventure since it is expected that he will be moving into larger quarters as he goes along.

At the centuries-old school, teachers are casually called “beaks,” while a reprimand for poor academic work is known as a “rip.” Students who turn up late can even find their names entered into the “Tardy Book,” giving the future king a whole new set of words to learn alongside his lessons.

There is more where that came from. The Blast reported that breaking school rules can land a student “on the Bill,” while “Abracadabra” is actually Eton’s name for the document used to plan the school timetable. For George, learning the lingo is simply another part of settling into a very different teenage world.

Prince George Is Already Preparing For His Bigger Royal Role

Prince George’s move to Eton comes at a time when he is becoming increasingly comfortable with the responsibilities that come with being the future king.

Away from the classroom, the teenager has already begun appearing more regularly alongside his parents at major public events, giving royal watchers a glimpse of the role he will one day inherit.

Over the past year, George has joined Prince William and Kate Middleton at Wimbledon, appeared on the Buckingham Palace balcony and taken part in several official engagements. His interests outside royal life also mirror his father in unexpected ways, from supporting Aston Villa to developing a love of music and learning guitar.
