The Army Is Telling Us To Pay Over 13K — Family of Fallen Soldier Ordered To Pay Money To Retrieve Body For Burial 

A Nigerian family is in anguish after the Nigerian Army allegedly demanded a payment of ₦2 million, approximately GH¢13,600 at current exchange rates before they can repatriate the remains of a soldier who died in active service.

The demand was made known through a tearful video posted online by the deceased’s sister, who broke down as she appealed to Nigerians for help.

In the clip, which has since gone viral on social media, the visibly distraught woman revealed that her brother had enlisted in the Nigerian Army at the age of 20 and served faithfully until his death.

“I never imagined the Nigerian Army would deteriorate to this point,” she said, her voice breaking.

According to the woman, army officials informed the family that unless the sum was paid, the soldier’s body would not be returned home for a proper burial, a condition she described as both shocking and deeply painful.

The family’s anguish is compounded by their history with the military. Their late father also served as a soldier, making the institution one the family had long respected and trusted. For them, the demand feels not only financially crushing but like a betrayal of a relationship built across generations.

As of the time of this report, the Nigerian Army had not issued any official statement addressing the allegations. It remains unclear whether the payment demand is an official military policy, an administrative fee, or as critics on social media have suggested an act of extortion by individuals within the institution.

The video has sparked outrage across Nigeria, with many calling on the military authorities to investigate the matter and ensure the soldier receives a burial befitting his service to the nation.
