The Texas Republican deleted his post after social media users noticed that the original account’s name had been changed to an explicit insult targeting him. However, the timing matters. The account reportedly changed its display name only after Cruz had already shared the post.

Cruz joined the many public figures honoring Parton following the country music legend’s death at age 80. The 55-year-old senator shared a post from an account using the handle @lebatardshowfan, which featured footage of a young Parton appearing on “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson” in 1979.

Parton, who was 33 at the time, could be seen playing guitar and performing a song reportedly created specifically for the appearance, titled “(I Never Really Made It Till) The Johnny Carson Show.” Cruz quote-posted the clip and added the simple caption, “Legend,” alongside crying-face, red-heart and prayer-hands emojis.

The tribute appeared straightforward until the account behind the original post made a sudden change.

X User Changed Display Name After Cruz Shared The Post

After Cruz amplified the video, the account’s owner reportedly changed the display name to “Ted Cruz’s tiny d-ck.” That meant the explicit phrase appeared above the Dolly Parton footage within Cruz’s tribute, making it look to some viewers as though the senator had knowingly shared a post from an account using the insulting name.

The user then responded directly to Cruz with a message referencing the senator’s political history with President Donald Trump. “Thanks for the retweet, Ted. Remember in 2016 you told the RNC Convention to “vote your conscience” and then ultimately gave up having any backbone and backed Trump who called your wife ugly? Fun times.”

Cruz subsequently deleted the tribute. Once the post was removed, the account owner reportedly reverted his display name to Mark.

Although Cruz removed the post, screenshots and reactions had already begun circulating. Several users initially appeared to believe the explicit display name had been visible when Cruz first shared the tribute.

Others recognized what had happened and described the incident as a carefully timed prank. “Step 1: drop a clip. Step 2: get Ted Cruz to quote it. Step 3: change your user name. Step 4: wait,” one person wrote as another questioned, “Did Ted Cruz even notice the name of the account he was quoting?”

Cruz has not publicly addressed why he deleted the post or whether he knew the account’s name had been changed after his tribute was published.

Cruz’s deleted post was one of countless tributes shared after Parton’s death was announced on Tuesday. The country icon’s nephew, Bryan Seaver, revealed the news in a video message he said Parton had “asked of me years ago before I fully absorbed it as a future reality.”

Seaver honored his aunt by saying she had “lived in the light” and was now “in the arms of Jesus.” He also said he believed Parton had been reunited with her late husband, Carl Dean, her parents and “countless others who have watched her and longed to meet her in the heavens.”

Parton had been admitted to Nashville’s Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center on Friday while dealing with autoimmune and kidney problems.

She died four days later at age 80.
