TCN debunks Kaduna Electric claim over Jos transmission line fault

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has dismissed a claim by Kaduna Electric that a fault on the 330kV Jos transmission line was responsible for reduced electricity supply across its franchise area.

TCN, in a statement issued on Thursday, said the transmission network serving Jos was fully operational, with all 330kV lines connected to the city carrying bulk electricity.

The company described Kaduna Electric’s claim as “false and a deliberate misrepresentation of facts”, insisting that there had been no interruption to bulk electricity transmission on any 330kV line supplying Jos since the restoration of the Jos-Lafia 330kV Line 2 circuit breaker.

According to TCN, the only incident involving the line occurred at about 3:30am on August 23, 2026, when the circuit breaker was deliberately opened to control voltage and maintain stability on the national grid.

“For the avoidance of doubt, all 330kV transmission lines connected to Jos are in service and transmitting bulk power,” the statement said.

“TCN recorded a lone incident on 23rd August 2026 at 03:30hrs, when the Jos-Lafia 330kV Line 2 circuit breaker was opened for voltage control. This was a routine operational action to maintain grid stability.”

TCN said the line was subsequently restored at 11:59pm on August 24 and had remained operational.

“There has been no outage or disruption of bulk electricity transmission on any 330kV line supplying Jos attributable to TCN since that restoration,” it added.

The clarification followed a statement by Kaduna Electric on Wednesday blaming a reduction in electricity supply across its coverage area on lower power allocation.

The distribution company had cited two factors, including the outage of one generating unit at the Shiroro Generating Station and what it described as a fault on the 330kV Jos transmission line.

Kaduna Electric claimed the situation had caused Shiroro to supply Jos and neighbouring areas instead.

It further stated that the National Control Centre Daily Load Allocation for August 25 showed that it received 104MW, made up of 54MW from the Mando 330kV Transmission Station and 50MW from the Birnin-Kebbi axis.

The DisCo said it was collaborating with TCN to ensure the equitable distribution of available electricity while monitoring efforts to improve supply.

TCN, however, urged Kaduna Electric and other stakeholders to confirm transmission-related information with the company before making public statements.

“We urge Kaduna Electric and other stakeholders to verify facts with TCN before issuing statements that misinform the public and create unnecessary anxiety,” it said.

The transmission company also advised electricity consumers in Jos and surrounding communities to disregard what it described as misleading information.
