Syracuse, New York Shooting: Cops Shot by Suspect With Machete
Two Syracuse police officers were shot Saturday after responding to a call about a man who had been menacing people and slashing a dog with a machete, setting off an ongoing standoff that has locked down parts of the city on one of its busiest days of the year.
What Happened
Officers were called to a downtown Syracuse apartment building shortly after noon following reports of the suspect threatening people and knifing a dog with a machete. When they arrived, the man had barricaded himself inside the apartment and opened fire on police through a window.
Two officers were struck by shotgun fire and taken to Upstate Medical Hospital. Both are in stable condition. A third officer was also hurt, though not by gunfire, and was also transported to the hospital.
Syracuse Mayor Sharon Owens said the two shot officers were in “good spirits” at the hospital, according to WSYR-TV.
The Situation Is Still Active
As of Saturday afternoon, the standoff was still ongoing, with occasional gunshots continuing to ring out from the apartment. The suspect had not been publicly identified.
The surrounding area has been placed on lockdown, including stretches of Interstate 81, creating significant disruptions in the city at an already busy time.

Bad Timing for Graduation Weekend
The timing of the lockdown hit thousands of visitors particularly hard. Syracuse University’s graduation was taking place Saturday, drawing families and guests from across the country to the city. The partial highway closure and area restrictions put a serious dent in those plans.
