Suspect dead after West Texas shooting kills 1 and injures at least 9 others

A shooter who opened fire in the West Texas city of Midland died on Friday after a stand-off with police following an attack that left one person dead and at least nine others injured, city officials said.

The suspect, 45-year-old Victor Mata Villarreal, had shot at police just days earlier during a chase and was already being sought by authorities when he began firing at officers and bystanders in Midland, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Police were called to the area after getting reports about an active shooter, authorities said.

Villarreal barricaded himself in an abandoned veterinary clinic and was found dead inside the building just a few hours after the shooting began, police said. They did not say how he died.

Midland Mayor Lori Blong said authorities used robot and drone footage to confirm that the shooter was dead.
