Stranded Nigerians in South Africa Cry Out Over Delayed Evacuation, Say They Are “Hungry and Homeless”

Nigerians stranded in South Africa amid ongoing evacuation arrangements have appealed for urgent intervention from the Federal Government, saying they are currently facing severe hardship, including hunger and homelessness.

The appeal was made by the president of the Nigerian Citizens Association South Africa (NICASA), Rev. Frank Onyekwelu, who urged authorities to accelerate the evacuation process and ease the suffering of affected citizens.

According to him, many of the stranded Nigerians had already travelled long distances in anticipation of the scheduled evacuation flights, only to be left waiting due to delays in the exercise.

“Several have exhausted their limited resources after travelling long distances in good faith, believing arrangements had been adequately concluded for their departure. They are hungry and homeless,” he said.

The group expressed frustration over the postponement of the second evacuation exercise planned by the Nigerian government, noting that the delay has worsened their living conditions.

Those affected reportedly include women, children, and elderly persons who have exhausted their savings while waiting for return arrangements to be completed.
