Stolen Legacy: How the CCP Hijacked the May Fourth Movement

To understand the reasons for this protest, it is important to note that the Qing Dynasty, which ruled China before,e was abolished a few years ago. Its successor, the Republic of China, faced numerous problems because of its dependency on the local warlords. Moreover, it could hardly be called an independent state since the country’s authorities could not defend national interests in foreign politics. Hence, the movement that began in 1919 was just an expression of dissatisfaction with the political reality. At the same time, unlike many others, this political movement was not associated with any political parties or organizations that could have promoted it.
