State Govt Approves 13th-Month Salary Bonus for Delta Civil Servants

Sheriff Oborevwori has approved the payment of a 13th-month salary bonus for civil servants in Delta State, a move aimed at rewarding public workers for their dedication and contributions to the state’s development.

The governor announced the new welfare package on Wednesday during the Dinner and Award Night organised in Asaba as part of activities marking the 2026 Public Service Week celebration.

The announcement was greeted with loud applause and excitement from civil servants, government officials and other dignitaries who attended the event, with many describing the gesture as a major boost to workers’ morale.

Speaking at the ceremony, Oborevwori said the decision was taken in recognition of the commitment, resilience and professionalism displayed by public servants in the discharge of their duties.

According to the governor, civil servants have continued to play a vital role in implementing government policies, driving development projects and ensuring the smooth delivery of essential public services across Delta State.

He noted that the introduction of the annual bonus is intended to improve workers’ welfare while encouraging them to remain dedicated, productive and committed to efficient service delivery.

The governor also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to prioritising the welfare of government employees, stressing that a motivated workforce remains essential to achieving sustainable development and effective governance.

With the approval, Oborevwori becomes the first governor in Delta State to introduce a 13th-month salary bonus for civil servants, setting a new benchmark for employee welfare within the state’s public service.

The 2026 Public Service Week was organised to honour the invaluable contributions of public servants and celebrate their role in implementing government programmes, maintaining public institutions and delivering critical services to residents throughout the state.

Federal Government Considers Fresh Salary Review

Meanwhile, the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, has disclosed that the Federal Government is considering another review of workers’ salaries in response to prevailing economic realities.

According to Gbajabiamila, the ₦70,000 national minimum wage approved by the administration of President Bola Tinubu in 2024 has gradually become inadequate due to rising inflation and the increasing cost of living.

He suggested that the government recognises the pressure facing Nigerian workers and is exploring measures that could improve their earnings and purchasing power, although no timeline has yet been announced for a possible salary adjustment.

The planned review, if implemented, is expected to form part of broader efforts by the Federal Government to cushion the impact of current economic challenges on workers and improve their overall welfare.
