Sowore Remanded In Kuje Prison Over Alleged Cybercrime

The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, at the Kuje Correctional Centre.

The development follows the revocation of the bail the court earlier granted him.

The activist will remain in custody until Wednesday, when proceedings will resume on a two-count cybercrime charge filed by the Department of State Services (DSS) against him for calling President Bola Tinubu a “criminal” in a social media post.

Trial Justice Mohammed Umar had, in a ruling on June 16, not only revoked the bail but also issued a warrant of arrest against the defendant.

The arrest order came after the defendant, who was billed to open his defence to the charge, failed to appear before the court for the continuation of his trial.

Sowore had earlier opted to represent himself before the court after his legal team withdrew from the case.

Meanwhile, Sowore has berated President Bola Tinubu over the extension of the tenure of the Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, by a final six months.

he latest development was confirmed in a statement on Friday, 19th June, 2026, by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

AS Comptroller General of Customs, Adeniyi’s first tenure extension ought to have expired on August 1, 2026.

The six-month extension, which will expire in February 2027, is to enable him to consolidate the implementation of the National Single Window and ensure an orderly succession in the service, Onanuga explained.

The presidential spokesperson added that during the transition period, Adeniyi, in conjunction with the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Board, will ensure the promotion of eligible officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs and the compulsory retirement of officers who have attained 60 years of age or have served 35 years.

In a post via his social media page, Sowore asserted that Adeniyi ought to have retired two years ago, stressing that the move, which he described as a wrong-headed policy, is a morale killer in public institutions.

Sowore maintained that Adeniyi’s extension undermines professionalism, blocks career progression, and sends the message that rules apply only to some while others enjoy political favouritism.

He wrote, “I wholeheartedly reject the six-month extension granted to the Comptroller-General of Customs after he should have retired nearly two years ago. This kind of wrong-headed policy is a morale killer in public institutions. It undermines professionalism, blocks career progression, and sends the message that rules apply only to some while others enjoy political favoritism. No institution can thrive when due process is sacrificed for personal or political convenience.”
