Sowore: Ideas Of Tinubu, Atiku, Obi Others Brought Poverty, Pain To Nigerians and I Have Better Ideas Than Them
Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has defended his decision to contest the 2027 presidential election, insisting that Nigeria’s current challenges are the result of ideas and leadership styles promoted by the country’s established political figures.
Speaking during an appearance on the Channels Television programme Politics Today, Sowore argued that repeated leadership from familiar political actors has deepened poverty, insecurity, hunger, and hardship across the country.
Responding to questions from anchor Seun Okinbaloye on why Nigerians should consider his ideas ahead of politicians such as Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Seyi Makinde and Rotimi Amaechi, Sowore said the policies associated with those leaders had contributed to Nigeria’s present difficulties.
According to him, “All of the ideas of the people you mentioned brought Nigeria into this circle of poverty, insecurity, pain, sorrow and tears.”
The former presidential candidate rejected suggestions that his repeated attempts at the presidency were merely routine political exercises, noting that several prominent Nigerian politicians had also contested multiple times before securing political offices.
Sowore maintained that he remains committed to contesting because he believes Nigerians deserve leaders with fresh ideas capable of addressing insecurity, poor governance, unemployment, and economic hardship.
During the heated exchange, he also criticised the media for allegedly giving more visibility to established politicians while questioning newer candidates more aggressively.
He claimed that some leading political figures avoided appearing for direct interviews during previous election cycles, while candidates with alternative ideas were subjected to tougher scrutiny.
The activist further stated that Nigeria’s worsening economic and social conditions make the 2027 election different from previous contests, insisting that citizens are becoming more aware of the need for change.
Sowore concluded by saying that Nigerians must decide whether to continue electing familiar political figures or support candidates who, according to him, possess ideas capable of transforming the country.
