Skitmaker Governor Amuneke declines INEC ambassador role over free speech concerns

Nigerian skitmaker and satire content creator Kevin Chinedu, popularly known for his “Governor Amuneke” character, has revealed why he turned down an offer to serve as a youth ambassador for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

In a video shared on his X (formerly Twitter) handle on Monday, Kevin Chinedu popularly known for his “Governor Amuneke” said he was initially overwhelmed with pride upon receiving the offer, describing it as a significant milestone in his journey as a content creator.

“Reports came to me that I was going to be appointed as INEC Youth Ambassador. I have never felt as proud of myself when I got that message,” he said.

He noted that the recognition held deep personal meaning, particularly given his background and the challenges he faced before gaining visibility online. According to him, the opportunity felt like a national honour and brought him emotional fulfilment.

However, his excitement reportedly diminished after he sought clarification on how the role would affect his creative freedom—especially his ability to critique public institutions through satire.

“I asked a simple question: ‘Am I going to still be able to criticise INEC if I’m appointed?’” he explained.

Chinedu said he was informed that while he could continue producing content and promoting civic responsibilities such as voter registration, he would not be allowed to directly criticise the electoral body.

“They told me they have seen the type of content I do… I can even preach about getting PVCs and all of that. However, I cannot criticise directly INEC,” he said.

The restriction, he noted, raised serious concerns, as his work is rooted in political satire and advocacy, often reflecting the frustrations and lived experiences of ordinary Nigerians.

“The moment I heard that, what seemed like congratulations disappeared. I wish it did not come with certain conditions to box my voice,” he added.

Chinedu emphasised that accepting such terms would contradict the purpose of his platform, which he said is driven by the voices and struggles of citizens across Africa. He argued that remaining silent on critical issues would undermine both his integrity and the expectations of his audience.

Reflecting on the broader responsibility of digital creators, he urged his peers not to compromise their voices for recognition or financial gain.

“If you have a platform today and you do not compromise, always remember there are millions of people whose hope is on that voice. That voice is not just yours,” he said.

Despite declining the offer, Chinedu expressed gratitude to those who recommended him, describing the gesture as meaningful recognition of his work. He reiterated his openness to collaborations, provided they do not impose restrictions on his content.

The development reinforces his previously stated stance on independence, having earlier disclosed that he rejected financial inducements from political actors seeking to influence his satirical output.
