Former Kano State governor and senior politician Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has ignited fresh political debate after making a bold claim about how President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is perceived in Kano State.

According to him, many residents of Kano are not judging the president directly based on federal policies or national actions. Instead, their impression of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is being heavily influenced by two dominant political figures in the state — former governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and the current governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

Speaking during an interview on Arise TV, Kwankwaso explained that in places like Kano, ordinary citizens often experience “government” through local leaders rather than through direct contact with the federal administration. Because of this, he said, the image of the president becomes indirectly shaped by how people view their state-level politicians.

In simple terms, he suggested that for many people in Kano, the “face” of national leadership is filtered through the actions, popularity, and controversies surrounding Ganduje and Governor Yusuf. This, according to him, strongly affects how federal leadership is judged on the ground.

Kwankwaso further noted that this pattern is not unique to Kano alone. He argued that across several Nigerian states, local political figures play a powerful role in shaping how citizens interpret the performance of the presidency, especially where federal presence is not strongly felt in everyday life.

He also pushed back against the idea that holding political office automatically guarantees total control over the electorate. According to him, modern Nigerian voters are becoming more informed and less predictable, making it harder for politicians to assume automatic loyalty or obedience.
