'Secret Testing?' Area 51 Hit By At Least 17 Earthquakes In 24 Hours, Sparking Fears
More than a dozen earthquakes have struck near Area 51 in the past 24 hours, with at least 17 tremors recorded just miles from the highly classified site. It seems that the cluster was triggered by the strongest quake, which was magnitude 4.4. It happened at a shallow depth of about 2.5 miles (four kilometers), which has raised eyebrows and sparked speculation about what might be going on underground.
The seismic events were recorded in a region not typically known for frequent earthquakes, raising questions among observers monitoring the unusual pattern. The latest tremor was detected early Thursday morning, with more than 100 people reporting shaking to the United States Geological Survey.
Geophysicist Stefan Burns told Daily Mail that the location is “an unusual place to get an earthquake,” noting the area has historically been relatively quiet compared to more active fault zones in the western United States.
He also pointed to the shallow depth of the quake as particularly notable. While Burns said the activity was most likely natural, he acknowledged there was “some ambiguity” in the seismic data. He added that earthquakes and underground explosions can sometimes produce similar seismic signals, making the activity “worth discussing in the context of whether this is a covert underground nuclear test.”
Despite the speculation, earthquake swarms can occur when stress shifts along nearby fault lines, causing clusters of smaller tremors as the Earth’s crust adjusts. The Nevada desert lies within an active tectonic region where the ground is gradually stretching, making sudden bursts of seismic activity possible, even near sensitive locations.
The reports quickly spread online, with some reacting humorously, while others pointed to the long history of secrecy surrounding Area 51.
The base has long been the focus of conspiracy theories, especially since the Cold War, that it is connected to UFOs, aliens and experimental aircraft testing. A 2025 report suggested that the Pentagon may have even promoted UFO conspiracies as a way to distract from classified weapons programs.
According to a United States Department of Defense review, officials once ran a disinformation campaign, even distributing doctored images of flying saucers to fuel speculation. In one instance, an Air Force colonel allegedly handed out fake UFO photos in a nearby bar, which helped spark widespread rumors.
Area 51, established in 1955, remained largely out of public view until 1989, when Robert Lazar claimed he had worked at a secret facility near Groom Lake, further cementing its place in UFO lore.
