Russian Airstrike Kills Nigerian Medical Student

A 23-year-old Nigerian medical student, Nnani Adaobi Marian, has died from injuries sustained during a Russian aerial bombardment of Kharkiv, Ukraine, days before she was scheduled to receive her medical degree.

Adaobi died at a hospital in Germany on Sunday, July 5, 2026, after doctors battled to save her life following the June 29 attack.

She was reportedly on her way to a graduation photoshoot with her close friend, Fatima Huseynova, when Russian forces dropped guided aerial bombs on the Kholodnohirskyi district of Kharkiv.

Huseynova died at the scene, while Adaobi sustained critical injuries.

The Nigerian student was initially rushed to a hospital in Kharkiv before she was transferred to Germany for further treatment.

She, however, died on Sunday. She was 23.

Adaobi and Huseynova had reportedly been studying remotely from Azerbaijan since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The two students travelled to Kharkiv to collect their diplomas, with their graduation ceremony scheduled for June 30.

Adaobi had been studying at Kharkiv National Medical University since 2020.

The university confirmed her death in a statement on Sunday, saying doctors in Ukraine and Germany fought to save her life.

“As a result of enemy shelling, Nnani Adaobi Marian was seriously injured.

“Doctors fought for her life until the last moment, first in Kharkiv and later in Germany.

“Everyone sympathised, helped and hoped for her recovery, but unfortunately, despite the doctors’ efforts, they could not save her,” the university said.

The university described Adaobi as a brilliant and hardworking student who was passionate about medicine and helping others.

“Nnani Adaobi Marian was a bright, sincere and kind-hearted person. She easily found common ground with people and was distinguished by her thirst for knowledge, hard work and sincere desire to help others,” the institution said.

During her medical studies, Adaobi participated in international training programmes at the University of Cambridge in 2024 and Biruni University in Turkiye in 2025.

The university said her death had thrown the institution into mourning.

The June 29 bombardment reportedly killed at least 14 people and injured 98 others across the Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia and Kharkiv regions, according to Ukrainian authorities.
