Rivers Assembly Summon Officials Over Alleged Misuse Of PAMO Varsity Funds

‎The Rivers State House of Assembly has constituted a seven-member ad hoc committee to investigate funds disbursed by the state government to the PAMO University of Medical Sciences, Port Harcourt, since the institution was established in 2017.

‎The committee, headed by the Deputy Speaker, Dumle Maol, was constituted by the Speaker, Martin Amaewhule, in line with Section 128 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended.

‎This was contained in a statement issued by the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Enemi George, releases on Friday.
‎
‎According to the statement, the probe will determine the amount of money the state government has provided to the university since its establishment and ascertain whether the funds were properly utilised for their intended purposes.

‎The committee is also expected to establish the number and identities of beneficiaries of the university’s scholarship scheme, if any, among other issues.

‎The statement partly read, “In line with section 128 of the 1999 Constitution as amended, the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule has constituted an Ad-Hoc Committee to conduct an inquiry into Rivers State Government’s disbursement of funds to PAMO University of Medical Sciences (PUMS).

‎”The committee has been mandated to unravel how much funds the University has received from the Rivers State Government since inception in 2017; determine whether such funds were adequately utilized for purposes they were meant for and ascertain the number as well as identities of all scholarship scheme beneficiaries if any, amongst other things.”

‎Other members of the committee are Silvanus Nwankwo, Lemchi Nyeche, Henrietta Loolo, Peter Abbey, Napoleon Ukalikpe and Emilia Amadi.

‎The investigation follows the Assembly’s decision not to approve the N6bn allocated to the university in the state’s 2026 budget.
‎PAMO University of Medical Sciences was founded by former Rivers State Governor, Peter Odili, who is also the institution’s Pro-Chancellor.
