Police disburse ₦39.8m to 21 families of fallen, injured officers in Edo
By Jethro Ibileke
The Edo State Police Command has disbursed the sum of ₦39,869,356.43 to 21 families and next-of-kin of police officers who died or sustained injuries in the line of duty.
The cheques were presented to the beneficiaries under the Group Life Assurance and Group Personal Accident Scheme of the Nigeria Police Force.
Presenting the cheques at the Command Headquarters in Benin City, the Commissioner of Police, Edo State, Patrick Daaor, said the gesture was part of efforts to ensure that the sacrifices of police personnel are matched with meaningful welfare support.
He said the presentation goes beyond financial assistance and represents the Force’s commitment to standing by its personnel and their families.
“Today is a significant moment for the Edo State Police Command. We are not merely presenting cheques; we are reaffirming our commitment to the welfare of our personnel and their families,” the CP said.
He acknowledged that no amount of money can compensate for the loss of a loved one or the pain of injury, but expressed hope that the support would provide relief to the affected families.
“While no amount of money can replace a lost loved one or erase the pain of injury, this support will, hopefully, provide some relief to the affected families and remind them that the Nigeria Police Force does not forget those who have sacrificed in its service,” he said.
The CP urged the beneficiaries to accept the payment as a token of appreciation for the sacrifices made by their loved ones.
“To our beneficiaries, please kindly accept this as a modest expression of our appreciation for the sacrifices made by your loved ones. May God continue to bless and protect the Nigeria Police Force and grant eternal rest to our fallen heroes,” he added.
The beneficiaries, who were visibly emotional, thanked the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, and the Edo State Police Command for the gesture and for remembering their families.
The Group Life Assurance Scheme is an initiative of the Nigeria Police Force aimed at improving the welfare of personnel and providing succour to families of deceased officers.
