Police Arrest Five Suspects Over Robbery And Murder of Gold Buyer At Agona

The Western Regional Police Command has arrested five suspects in connection with the robbery and murder of a 40-year-old gold buyer, Seth Kobina, at Agona Fie near Agona Nkwanta in the Western Region.

According to police preliminary investigations, the incident happened on Thursday, August 20, 2026, at about 8:00 p.m., when armed men allegedly attacked a gold-buying shop belonging to Seth Kobina. The attackers reportedly shot him in the chest during the operation before fleeing the scene.

The injured gold dealer was rushed to the Agona Nkwanta Hospital for medical attention but was pronounced dead on arrival.

The Police said investigations, including a review of CCTV footage from the area, helped identify Emmanuel Amponsah, alias “Vandam”, 29, as the alleged leader of the robbery gang. He was arrested on August 21 at a guest house in Agona Nkwanta, where police reportedly recovered a locally manufactured pistol and two live BB cartridges from him.

However, police said Amponsah later fell ill after his arrest and was rushed to the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The circumstances surrounding his death were not immediately disclosed.

Further investigations led to the arrest of four other suspects identified as Christopher Seyiri, alias “Cross and Die”, 47; Bashiru Ibrahim, 20; Thomas Odoom, alias “Wale”, 30; and Isaac Quayeson, alias “Last Burial”.

Police said a search of Isaac Quayeson’s residence at Denkyira Kwaboso in the Western North Region resulted in the recovery of another locally manufactured pistol, three live BB cartridges, a metal bar and two cutlasses.

During questioning, police said Quayeson identified Amponsah as the person who allegedly shot Seth Kobina and also identified Thomas Odoom as one of the suspects captured in the CCTV footage.

The four surviving suspects are currently assisting the police with investigations as efforts continue to arrest other persons believed to have been involved in the robbery.

The killing has renewed concerns over security challenges facing gold dealers and businesses operating in mining communities across the Western Region.
