Police Arrest 35th Suspect Over Deadly Overasselt Shooting

Dutch police have arrested a 35th suspect over the deadly shooting in Overasselt.

The suspect is a 26-year-old man from Belgium.

The attack happened during the early hours of September 1, 2026, outside a home on Ewijkseweg.

Security guard Berry Leenders, 51, died during the shooting. Two police officers also suffered injuries.

Police initially arrested 34 people. A court ordered 32 of them to remain in custody while the investigation continues.

Authorities released two suspects. However, prosecutors said they remain under investigation because officials have not ruled out a connection to the incident.

The detained group includes two French teenagers aged 16 and 17.

It also includes 14 French adults and 11 Dutch adults. The remaining suspects come from Belgium, Libya, Ukraine and Algeria.

The adult suspects are between 18 and 32 years old.

Prosecutors suspect the group of involvement in the killing of Leenders and the shooting of the two police officers.

Investigators have not determined who fired the shots.

Security footage showed a large group of masked and armed people approaching a vehicle on the property before shots were fired.

Reports suggest the attackers may have targeted Jan G. Junior, an alleged drug trafficker. He has not been identified as a suspect in the shooting.

A separate video showed masked and armed men threatening him over an allegedly stolen cocaine shipment.

Reports have given different figures for the amount of cocaine mentioned in the video. Police were still investigating the footage’s authenticity and its possible connection to the attack.

Police continued searching for weapons and bullets in and around Overasselt on Sunday.

A memorial for Leenders was cancelled because of unspecified safety concerns. He regularly worked as a security guard for a student association in Nijmegen.

The investigation continues, and police have warned that more arrests may follow.
