PM Modi-Trump Meeting: PM Modi to meet Donald Trump for first time amid Iran war; know when and in which country will the meeting take place?

A possible meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Donald Trump is once again drawing global attention, with both leaders likely to come face-to-face at the upcoming G7 Summit in France next month. Notably, the two leaders have not met in person since February 2025, when PM Modi visited the White House shortly after Trump returned to power.

Will PM Modi and Trump meet at the G7 Summit?

India is not a permanent member of the G7, but it has been regularly invited as a special guest. This year, French President Emmanuel Macron has invited PM Modi to attend the summit scheduled from June 15 to 17 in Evian-les-Bains. While no formal bilateral meeting has been confirmed, a brief pull-aside interaction between PM Modi and Trump remains highly possible, especially given Trump’s unpredictable diplomatic style.

The two leaders were earlier expected to meet at last year’s G7 Summit in Canada, but the meeting did not happen after Trump left the event abruptly. An alternative plan for PM Modi to visit Washington was also dropped due to scheduling conflicts.

What caused tensions between India and the US?

Despite their public display of friendship, India-US relations have seen a turbulent phase in recent months. Tensions escalated after Trump claimed credit for brokering a ceasefire between India and Pakistan during their recent hostilities. India strongly rejected the claim.

Trade disputes further strained ties. The US imposed steep tariffs on Indian goods, including additional duties linked to India’s purchase of Russian oil. Key Trump allies, including Scott Bessent and Peter Navarro, publicly criticised India’s policies, accusing it of indirectly supporting Russia’s war efforts.

Can the G7 meeting reset ties?

There have been signs of improvement in recent months. Trade negotiations picked up pace, and tariffs were partially reduced. The two leaders also held multiple phone conversations this year, including a 40-minute call in April where they discussed bilateral ties and the West Asia situation.

However, global developments like the Iran conflict and legal challenges in the US have delayed a formal trade agreement. Against this backdrop, even a short interaction between PM Modi and Trump at the G7 Summit could be significant.
