Peter Obi Alleges Three Governors Prevented Him From Visiting Their States

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has alleged that three state governors recently prevented him from visiting their states, claiming that his constitutional right to freedom of movement is being undermined because of his political activities.

Naijapunchnews reports that Obi made the allegation during an interview with The Sun while responding to questions about his recent claims of threats to his life.

Although the former Anambra State governor did not identify the states or the governors involved, he maintained that he had been discouraged from visiting them.

“I have tried to go to about three states, but the governors would say that I shouldn’t come,” Obi said.

He questioned why any elected official should attempt to restrict his movement within the country.

“The question is: don’t we have freedom of movement in Nigeria? Why would anybody tell me not to come to a state?”

Obi further alleged that he had been warned that his life could be at risk if he proceeded with the visits.

“I have been told that if I come, my life is in danger. What else do you want me to say? What I am saying is there for everybody to see.”

The former governor argued that such actions amount to an infringement on his constitutional rights and reflect the challenges facing Nigeria’s democratic space.

His comments come amid growing exchanges between the opposition figure and members of the current administration over allegations of intimidation and political harassment.

Recall that in July 2025, Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo publicly warned Obi against visiting the state without obtaining security clearance.

Obi had also recently alleged during a podcast interview that his movements and activities were being deliberately frustrated by those in authority.

The NDC presidential candidate has repeatedly maintained that political leaders and public office holders should be free to travel across Nigeria without intimidation or restrictions, insisting that freedom of movement is a constitutional right guaranteed to every Nigerian citizen.
