Panic in Cross River as Over 200 Armed Cameroonian Security Personnel Allegedly Enter Nigerian Community[VIDEO]

Tension swept through Danare community in Boki Local Government Area of Cross River State on Wednesday after reports emerged that more than 200 heavily armed Cameroonian security personnel crossed into Nigerian territory without obtaining formal border clearance.

The unexpected movement of the foreign security operatives reportedly triggered widespread fear among residents, forcing many families to flee their homes amid concerns that the situation could spiral into a major security crisis.

According to local sources, the armed officers entered the border community in the early hours of the day, causing alarm among villagers who were uncertain about the purpose of the operation. Witnesses said the sight of hundreds of armed personnel moving through the area created panic and confusion, particularly given the history of security challenges along the Nigeria-Cameroon border.

A former Vice Chairman of Boki Local Government Area, Hon. Kingsley Mbia, was said to have played a key role in defusing tensions during the incident. Community members claimed that Mbia confronted the foreign security personnel and warned against any action that could be interpreted as a violation of Nigeria’s territorial sovereignty.

Residents said his intervention helped calm nerves and may have prevented a potential confrontation between local inhabitants and the visiting security forces.

The development has heightened anxiety in Danare and neighbouring communities, many of which have long been affected by instability arising from the conflict in Cameroon’s English-speaking regions. For years, communities along the border have accommodated refugees and displaced persons fleeing violence linked to the separatist crisis in the neighbouring country.

Residents described Wednesday’s incident as deeply disturbing, noting that the arrival of such a large contingent of armed foreign officers without prior notice raised serious questions about border security and the protection of local communities.

Some community members expressed fears that the operation could be connected to ongoing military activities against separatist groups in Cameroon, a conflict that has occasionally spilled across international boundaries.

The latest development also revived memories of previous cross-border incidents. In 2017 and 2018, Cameroonian troops were reportedly accused of entering Danare and other border communities while pursuing separatist fighters. Those incidents sparked diplomatic concerns and attracted the attention of Nigerian security agencies as well as lawmakers.

Following Wednesday’s reported incursion, community leaders called on the Federal Government, the Nigerian military, and other security agencies to intensify surveillance along the Nigeria-Cameroon border. They urged authorities to provide reassurance to residents and take proactive measures to prevent future unauthorised entry by foreign security forces.

They further warned that repeated cross-border movements by armed personnel could worsen tensions in communities already grappling with security and humanitarian challenges, stressing the need for stronger border monitoring and diplomatic engagement to safeguard Nigeria’s territorial integrity.
