Osun NUJ set to celebrate 35th Anniversary, 2026 Press Week

The Osun State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) is set to celebrate its 35th anniversary alongside the 2026 Press Week with a series of activities designed to promote professionalism, unity, healthy living and camaraderie among journalists in the state.

The week-long celebration, scheduled to run from Friday, October 23, to Sunday, November 1, 2026, will feature religious services, a public lecture, health walk and medical check-up, sporting activities, sanitation exercise, cultural display, awards, an interaction with past leaders, an Asun night and a thanksgiving service.

According to the programme released by the Secretary of the Council, Comrade Olalekan Akindoju, the celebration will commence with a Jumat service on Friday, October 23, at 2pm.

The opening ceremony and public lecture will hold on Monday, October 26, at 10am at the NUJ Press Centre, Osogbo.

On Tuesday, October 27, journalists will participate in a health walk and medical check-up at 7am, while the final of the press week sporting activities will take place at 3pm at the Technical College, Osogbo.

The council has also introduced a Sanitation Day and Cultural Day as part of activities for this year’s celebration. The sanitation exercise will hold on Wednesday, October 28, at 7am, followed by the Cultural Day at 11am, both at the NUJ Press Centre, Osogbo.

Another major highlight of the celebration will be the NUJ Award of Recognition for members of the society who have distinguished themselves in their chosen fields, scheduled for Thursday, October 29, at 10am.

The council said the 2026 Press Week will also introduce an expanded and rebranded NUJ Professional Awards, with a major focus on recognising excellence, dedication and outstanding contributions by members of the union to journalism and the development of the profession.

A special programme, “A Day with Past Leaders,” will also be held on Friday, October 30, at 3pm at the NUJ Press Centre. The programme will provide an opportunity for current members to interact with former leaders of the council, share experiences and reflect on the history and growth of the union.

The day’s activities will continue with an Asun Night scheduled for 8pm at the NUJ Press Centre.

The celebration will be followed by “An Evening with the Royal Father” on Saturday, October 31, at 2pm, while a church thanksgiving service will be held on Sunday, November 1, at 10am.

Osun NUJ Chairman, Comrade Adeyemi Aboderin, said the anniversary and Press Week are expected to provide an opportunity to celebrate the contributions of journalists to society, strengthen bonds among members and promote professionalism while reflecting on the achievements and future of the council.
