Old Video Of Late JJ Rawlings Narrating How He ‘Sacked’ Azuma Nelson From Ghana Armed Forces Surfaces 

A resurfaced video of the late former President Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings has drawn attention online, in which he recounts personally stepping in to stop boxing legend Azumah Nelson from enlisting in the Ghana Air Force, a decision he believed helped shape the trajectory of one of Africa’s greatest boxing careers.

In the clip, Rawlings explained that during his time at the helm of the Air Force, Azumah Nelson would regularly come around to train alongside servicemen, a connection that grew out of an African boxing competition hosted in Ghana at the time, in which Nelson was competing.

It was during those training sessions that Nelson reportedly expressed interest in formally joining the service.

Rawlings, however, said he saw something in the young boxer that made him hesitate.

According to him, he could sense a kind of fire in Nelson, an intensity that convinced him enlistment would do more harm than good to his potential.

He worried that once bound by the rigid structures and regulations of military service, that fire would be dimmed rather than fueled, holding back a talent he believed was destined for far bigger things.

Rather than let him enlist, Rawlings said he made the call to turn him away, telling him plainly that if his ambition was to become a world champion, joining the service was never going to be the path that got him there.

Looking back, the decision stands as one of the quieter but more consequential interventions in Ghanaian sporting history, one that Rawlings himself seemed to view as instrumental in Azumah Nelson going on to become one of the continent’s most celebrated boxing champions.
