A public affairs analyst, Tochukwu Jimo Obi, has criticised what he described as persistent public attacks on former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, by actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo, comparing the situation to political solidarity often seen in other regions of the country.
According to a video posted on the official YouTube channel of Afia News on Friday, June 19, 2026, Obi made the remarks while analysing tensions within Nigeria’s opposition political space during a live broadcast.
He argued that political behaviour often differs across regions, particularly in how leaders are defended or criticised during national debates.
In his words, “I never saw anyone from the core North criticize or condemn the late Muhammadu Buhari the way Kenneth Okonkwo is criticizing Peter Obi today.”
Obi said this comparison highlights what he sees as inconsistent patterns of political loyalty and public criticism within Nigeria’s political environment.
He suggested that northern political actors tended to maintain stronger internal cohesion during Buhari’s administration, often avoiding open criticism of the former president even during periods of widespread national challenges.
He contrasted this with what he described as increasing public disagreements within southern opposition politics, particularly among individuals aligned with Peter Obi’s political movement.
The analyst expressed concern over what he called widening divisions within the opposition, warning that internal public disputes could weaken political strategy and reduce collective influence ahead of future elections.
He argued that sustained public criticism among political allies risks deepening fractures and undermining efforts to build a united opposition front.
Obi further noted that in many political systems, internal disagreements are often managed discreetly to preserve broader political interests and avoid weakening group cohesion.
