Obidients say Obi is a wise politician by not contesting ADC Primary, I disagree with them – Akindele

According to a report by Daily Post on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ayekooto Akindele, has stated that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is being positioned as a political platform allegedly intended by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to disrupt the possibility of a southern presidency.

He made this assertion while addressing ongoing political discussions surrounding party alignments and presidential ambitions in the country.

His remarks came in response to comments associated with the Obidient Movement, which suggested that Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, took a strategic and intelligent step by leaving the ADC and moving to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

The statement from the group highlighted Obi’s decision as politically sound in relation to his future political direction.

Ayekooto Akindele, however, disagreed with that position and maintained that the interpretation being circulated by the Obidient Movement did not reflect the broader political realities as he understood them.

He linked the conversation to wider ambitions within Nigeria’s political space, especially concerning the zoning of presidential power between the northern and southern regions.

He further argued that Atiku Abubakar had previously attempted to use the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as a platform to secure electoral victory with the intention of returning presidential power to the North.

According to him, that effort did not achieve its intended outcome, leading to a shift in political strategy and alignment over time.

Akindele also suggested that recent political movements and party associations should be viewed within the context of long-term presidential ambitions and regional power considerations.

He maintained that such alignments often reflect deeper strategic calculations among major political actors rather than isolated decisions by individual politicians.

He made the comments publicly through a post shared on his Facebook page, where he addressed the circulating views and expressed disagreement with the narrative presented by supporters of the Obidient Movement.

The post formed the basis of his reaction to the ongoing debate about Peter Obi’s political choices and party affiliation.

He said, “ObiDIENTs say Obi is a wise politician by not contesting in the ADC Primary but instead ran away from the party. I disagree with them.”
