Nurse accidentally ‘cuts off one-year-old boy’s finger with scissors’ in hospital horror

The family of a one-year-old boy was shocked when a nurse accidentally cut off his finger with scissors as they were preparing to discharge him. 

The hospital in Thailand has apologised after confirming it was a male assistant nurse who accidentally cut off a part of a boy’s right index finger. 

The incident occurred at Loengnoktha Crown Prince Hospital in Yasothon, during the boy’s discharge on September 11 as they were removing the gauze holding a intravenous tube in place, according to the Bangkok Post. 

Following the horrifying error, the severed finger was placed in an ice box so the boy could be taken to another hospital, Sunpasitthiprasong Hospital, for it to be reattached. 
 

The boy has since undergone two operations but it is reportedly too early to know whether or not the operation was a success. 
 

He was first admitted on September 2 due to a respiratory and gastrointestinal infection. 
 

The incident is believed to have been made public by the boy’s mum, Wiphaphon Namkhan, who posted a timeline and images of the incident on Facebook. 
 

According to Namkhan, the assistant nurse allegedly inserted the scissors between the boy’s fingers but found it difficult to cut through the gauze between them. Suddenly blood spurted out and it was realised that part of the boy’s finger was cut. 
 

The hospital posted a public apology following the incident and have launched an inviestigation. They also confirmed the nurse has been suspended. 
 

The statement read: “Following the incident, the medical and nursing team worked together to provide assistance to the patient to the best of their abilities, and a comprehensive review of patient care procedures has been conducted to ensure the safety of future hospital patients”. 
 

It is believed that the family of the boy have since filed a police report. 

The boy remains in hospital recovering and is currently having breathing difficulties, according to Namkhan.
